Niger
Delta Wetlands Centre is to carry out research, natural resource
management and human development activities; it is to implement
goal-directed projects for community-driven development actions to
improve the quality of life and alleviate poverty in the Niger Delta.
Goal to be addressed through four programmes with defined objectives:
Programme 1: Research
Ecology,
Plant, Animal and Habitat Biodiversity, Ecology, Hydrology,
Environmental pollution/degradation, sustainable resource use,
community structure and economics, and resource utilization
Programme 2: Conservation/Resource Management
Environmental
Impact Assessments; Feasibility of Establishment of Protected Areas,
Community Resource Protection and Integrated Management Planning, Local
language data-bases on resources. Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs)
especially solar and wind.
Programme 3: Poverty Alleviation
Participatory
rural appraisals, Resource Centres, Socioeconomic and development pilot
projects, community development projects; feasibility studies.
Environmental education/enlightenment, awareness building. Functional
literacy, skills acquisition training.
Programme 4: Institutional development (Capacity Building)
Fully
furnished offices and resource centres, all with residential and office
facilities for visiting scientists and organisations: Port Harcourt,
Finima (Bonny Island), Yenagoa (Bayelsa State). Management and field
staff; project-specific consultants and resource persons recruited as
needed. Training in Solar Energy Applications, Information and
communication technologies (ICT), Geographic Information Systems
(GIS),. C-Band VSAT and 30 computers in Yenagoa and 15 computers in
Port Harcourt.
